My Netflix Obsession: Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker

Since we are all doubling down on social distancing, I am making SURE to do my part by getting my entertainment fix from home by streaming the latest Netflix titles. This week, we streamed Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker. This is the filmmaker’s adaption of the life of Madam C.J. Walker, one of America’s First Black Women to become a millionaire.

We open this up with a beautiful moment of sisterhood. Sarah (the Madam) had been having an extremely hard time with life, making an income and was under a tremendous amount of stress. Luckily for her, Annie showed up at the perfect moment to help pick her back up. While this is the sisterhood moment we all hope to have when we are at our lowest, this beautiful friendship doesn’t turn out to be that fairytale womanhood bond we’d hoped for.

After continuing to be beaten down by what life has thrown her way, the Madam continues to whip up her hair products in her kitchen because she knows that no matter what, no matter who and no matter where she will succeed. That’s something I am so in love with and inspired by in this film. No matter how many no’s she hears (and she hears a lot), or how many walls are placed in front of her she keeps pushing through and holds strong to her vision. And we already know the end of this story, she goes from whipping it up in the kitchen to a multimillion-dollar success story.

I think this adaption of Madam C.J. Walker’s life can help inspire us to keep our options open to every available opportunity! While Sarah had a clear plan for every step of the way, she actually ended up making it happen in a different way than she planned. It was through her hard work, determination, unwavering faith in herself and her uncanny ability to connect to the women around her that kept her propelling forward.

We only get 4 episodes of this Netflix limited series, and I could watch this drama unfold through an entire limited series more! There’s so many takes, knowledge nuggets, and pieces we can take and use as inspiration in our own lives but I don’t want to spoil it! So grab your popcorn, and your closest friends and tune in to Self Made: Inspired by the Life of Madam C.J. Walker on Netflix tonight.
